Be More Hygge

Beachspoke's very own guide to living Danishly

Ever wondered why the Danes are so happy? You’ll be surprised to hear it’s not simply the fifty-two weeks of parental leave or the fact that they create delicious pastries, in Denmark happiness is an established movement and state of being. ‘Hygge’ (pronounced ‘hue-ugh’), translates into English to mean ‘cosiness’. This year over ten books have been published on the subject already, with demand for cashmere socks consequently skyrocketing. We felt an instant affiliation to this latest lifestyle craze and decided it required further investigation.

Hygge; Scandie; Escapism

Unlike other lifestyle fads such as ‘Clean Living’, ‘Juice Cleansing’ and even ‘Mindfulness’, Hygge’s simple philosophy requires you to surround yourself with things you love. One can practise the art of Hygge by catching up with friends and family over a home-cooked meal;  being adventurous and exploring the great outdoors; enjoying a good book by a roaring log fire or even stopping momentarily to truly appreciate a good cup of coffee.

Here are Beachspoke’s tips on how to be that little bit more Hygge.

1. Truly Relax

Hygge is all about truly appreciating time for yourself. Whether it’s enjoying a soak in the vintage, free standing baths in Yarrow  or curling up in the ‘cave’ in Black Moon with a good book. There are numerous ways to truly appreciate a bit of downtime.

2. Appreciate the Great Outdoors

Appreciating your surroundings and exploring the world around you is key to Hygge philosophy. With each of our properties, we list specific ‘Experience Pages’ to help you explore your surrounding area. Dartmoor National Park is on your doorstop at The Barn in Devon, with incredible coastal walks a stones through away in Blackmoon.

Beachspoke properties also boast some breathtaking views from within the properties themselves. You could take a moment to sit and appreciate the incredible scene from the kitchen in Little Cottage or take in the picturesque harbour view from your bedroom window in Harbour Moon.

3. Enjoy Time with Family & Friends

The very nature of a Beachspoke holiday allows you to spend quality time with the ones you love the most. Whether you’re on a large family holiday or a romantic trip for two, Beachspoke has you covered. ‘Little Cottage‘ is the best bet for large groups of families and friends. Sleeping up to eleven, this modern, spacious property is set over two floors consists of a large open plan fully equipped kitchen and living room, with two large sofas in front of a wood burning stove. Alternatively, The Barn is the perfect getaway for two. The open plan kitchen is idealfor cooking up a romantic dinner. Set in the charming village of Cotleigh, your minutes away from the market town of Honiton and surrounded by plenty of pubs, walks and countryside pursuits to explore.

4. The Finer Things…

There are few better ways of enjoying time with friends and family than over a good meal or a lovely glass of wine. Each Beachspoke property lists our favourite places to eat and drink in your location as well as providing our tried and tested ‘Recipe of the Week‘ to help our guests choose the perfect holiday dish. We encourage our guests to look out for local grocers, butchers and bakers in the area to truly appreciate seasonal, local produce wherever you may be.

Comfortable Essentials:

As we’ve established, Hygge is all about feeling relaxed and comfortable. Dressing to suit your environment is therefore key. Whether you’re curled up in a cosy pair of pajamas or wrapped up for a long winter walk, warmth and comfort are imperative. We love the beautifully designed pajamas from Desmond & Dempsey, silk eye masks from Olivia Von Halle and all the cashmere delights from Bamford.
