Meet the ever smiling energetic Philly. As a surfer, photographer and ocean lover following the open road across the globe, Philly Lewis believes the best education comes from travel, embracing new experiences, people and places. She is inspired by the ocean and capturing the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Philly is a certified yoga teacher specialising in Vinyasa Flow and is currently sponsored by Animal UK. Your mornings will be spent exploring meditation followed by energising yoga with the best soundtrack to see you through your day in paradise.
Her classes consist of dynamic flows to strengthen, soothing cool downs to create space and plenty of smiles. She loves experimenting with creative sequences, exploring inversions with her students and has a keen interest in anatomy. Having experienced the life changing practices of yoga, Philly became passionate about sharing the positive practices that have a healing benefit in both mind and body.
We caught up with Philly to find out more about Wild & Free Adventures and what makes Cornwall one of the best holiday destinations.
Tell us about your connection to Cornwall
Since I was little, my family came to Cornwall every year, I spent hours on the beach running wild. After travelling the world for a year, I had to come back to England and Cornwall was the only place I could imagine living. So combining my love to the ocean and photography I moved down to Falmouth to study and Falmouth Uni. After graduating (and more travelling), I decided to live in Cornwall and I soon met Alan who is now my husband! I’ve been to many places but there is a magic in Cornwall that I can’t find anywhere else. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place and lucky to be able to see the ocean every day. When I’m home in Cornwall, I feel instantly calm. I feel connected and grounded. There’s no place better. There’s a great quote I once read whilst travelling – ‘It is a truism to say that Cornwall either calls to you, or it doesn’t. But if it does, you must answer. The spirit and soul and heart of Cornwall will not be denied.’
What are some of your favourite things about living in Cornwall?
I love how wild Cornwall is and I love that if you want to be alone with the wild you can. There’s so many places to find your own haven.

As a yoga teacher, surfer, photographer and ocean lover following the open road across the globe, I believe the best education comes from travel, embracing new experiences, people and places. I’m inspired by the ocean love to share my positive energy, healing space and practice by offering yoga classes on the beach.
My classes consist of dynamic flows to strengthen, combined with awesome soundtracks, soothing cool downs to create space and plenty of smiles! I love to experiment with creative sequences, and have keen interest in anatomy, allowing me to tailor each class to each student. Having experienced the life changing practices of yoga, I became passionate about sharing the positive practices that have had a healing benefit in both my mind and body. I also loves to teach Restorative Yoga, Yin and Meditation.
Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a creative, energetic series of poses that are linked together with the flow of the breath. The flows are repeated for consistency, with the power of inhaling and exhaling creating a link in the mind, body and spirit, feeling balanced as a whole. Yin is a meditative practice in which floor based poses are held for 1 – 3 minutes, allowing a deep release into the fascia and connective tissue of the body.
How long have you been practising Yoga and teaching Surfing?
I started practicing yoga about 6 years ago whilst I was travelling around the world and started teaching about 3 years ago, whilst I was studying Photography at Falmouth Uni. I started surfing regularly about 5 years ago when I moved to Cornwall…It’s never too late to learn!
Why is Cornwall a fantastic place to practise Yoga?
The beaches and the views are incredible! I find that the connection to nature, the slower pace of life can really help you connect with your inner peace.
You and your partner Alan run Wild & Free Adventures – tell us a bit more about this
I’m a yoga teacher and Alan is a pro-surfer. We were both sharing our passions and we decided it would be amazing to share them together with surf and yoga retreats all around the world sharing the balance and freedom each one offers mind, body and soul. We both love to travel and love to spend time with people showing them an easier way of life, allowing them to connect to their true nature. .So we started surf and yoga retreats in our home in Cornwall which then expanded to Fuerteventura, Costa Rica, Portugal…to name a few. Our retreats really are one of a kind with expert surf and yoga mentoring from two of the best in their field. Run by me and one of Europe’s best professional surfers, three times British Champion Alan Stokes. Our aim is simple, to create a relaxed and fun environment in some of the best surf and yoga holiday locations on the planet. Your really learning from the best which is why lots of our guests keep coming back! Our knowledge of teaching, travelling and living is extensive. I think above all, we just like to meet good people!
You must travel a lot – what have been some of your favourite places you’ve travelled to?
Everywhere! We have been to so many different places and they are all unique in their own way. I love Sri Lanka for the culture and tropical beaches. I love Costa Rica for it’s cool vibe and laid back lifestyle. I love Morocco for the culture shock. But no matter how incredible a place is, I always love coming back to Cornwall. Cornwall is so special, there’s no where else you can find empty beaches like you can here.
What would be your tips for people visiting Cornwall for places to go and things to do?
To visit out of season (the summer months are crazy busy) and get outside as much as possible! The north coast is full of coastal paths (you can walk around the whole of the Cornish coast), Kynance Cove is stunning and Bedruthen Steps. When you visit in May or September you can have most the places to yourself. Cardinham woods is fun for mountain biking. St Ives is a beautiful town to grab a tradtional pasty. Sennen is perfect to learn to surf.
In your opinion, what makes Cornwall such a special place to spend a holiday?
The beaches! The outdoors.
